The Circuit of the Americas (COTA) is an established F1 Grand Prix venue. Although the history of the United States Grand Prix dates back to the 1950s, the first F1 race was held here in 2012.
COTA was completed in 2012 and the first Formula One Grand Prix was held here on the 18th of November 2012. Lewis Hamilton won the race for the McLaren-Mercedes team.
The second edition of the United States Grand Prix at COTA was held on 17 November 2013. This time Sebastian Vettel, driving for the Red Bull Racing team, won the race. It was Vettel's eighth consecutive victory this season, which eventually led to his fourth consecutive Drivers' Championship title.
In the following years, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team dominated. Lewis Hamilton won races in 2014, 2015, and 2017, while Nico Rosberg won in 2016 and Valtteri Bottas in 2019. However, in 2018, Kimi Räikkönen broke Mercedes' winning streak and took the win for Scuderia Ferrari.
In 2020, the United States Grand Prix at COTA was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was part of a major disruption to the Formula One calendar, with several races postponed or cancelled. In 2021, the United States Grand Prix at COTA returned and the race was won by Max Verstappen of the Red Bull Racing team. This victory played a key role in his successful bid to win the Drivers' World Championship in 2021. The Dutchman subsequently triumphed in Austin in 2022 and 2023 as well.
Throughout its history in Formula One, COTA has earned a reputation as a challenging track with various corners inspired by iconic sections of other race circuits around the world. It is also renowned for its lively atmosphere, which attracts large crowds of enthusiastic fans.
